Have you ever been in a dirty church? I’m talking cobwebs in the doors, windows, and stairways. The pews were well worn, and the floor underneath was consistently dirty from Michigan winter boots. They couldn’t afford to hire a custodian and Easter was coming. Would you like to spend Easter Sunday in a dirty church, staring at the cobwebs in their pretty stained-glass windows? A March Into Action day was scheduled and announced and everyone arrived with rags and buckets, wood & paneling cleaner and even a floor steamer. And of course, there was a potluck afterwards, because yes, this was a Methodist church, and we like our potlucks. That Easter Sunday everyone was dressed in their fine clothes and as they looked around at the gleaming pews and walls that were freshly painted, this congregation felt a renewed sense of pride in their church.
No matter where Easter falls on the calendar, one thing that you can pretty much count on is that March will be in the season of Lent. This is a season which is all about admitting and recognizing our sin and unfaithfulness. It isn’t about giving up chocolate or even meat on Fridays. It is about renewing or even reviving our connection with God. Some people do that through different forms of fasting, prayer, or meditation. Some by picking up new Bible Studies or even making Easter preparations. It doesn’t have to be a group event with a potluck, even though we do like our soup suppers (Wednesday nights at 6pm in Shelby). Maybe you might spend 5 more minutes in prayer each day. Whatever your situation is, you too can March Into Action in some way this Lenten season so that you might rejoice in the glory of God.
Blessings to you all,
Pastor Bev
