I don’t like winter with all of the snow and the ice. I am much more a sunny time person, and I do not like being cold at all. However, it is just another season of the year that God created and God has purpose for winter.
Did you know that every winter in Sweden there is an ice hotel, completely created of ice? Since 1989 this group goes to great lengths to create rooms of ice, seating, sculptures, and even dinner plates made of ice. https://www.icehotel.com
These folks really seem to enjoy their cold weather, although I would probably want to use the sauna. Hmmmm – they probably don’t have one of those in there. It just goes to show how creative people can be. Recently, I saw these words in Job about snow and ice:
“For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth’; and the shower of rain, his heavy shower of rain, serves as a sign on everyone’s hand, so that all whom he has made may know it. Then the animals go into their lairs and remain in their dens. From its chamber comes the whirlwind, and cold from the scattering winds. By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast. ” (NRSV; Job 37:6-10)
Gee, I never thought of ice as the breath of God before. I only saw it as a nuisance when I wanted to go somewhere. This would mean that the ice on our driveway, and on the trees is the breath of God that is made visible to us. In other words – God’s breath that we can see, taste and touch. This text has those “so that” words which tell us to pay attention to them; “so that all whom he has made may know it”. That’s God’s message for us this winter, so that we may be assured that even snow and cold is a creation of the Mighty God that we serve.
So bundle up this month, those of you hearty folks that stay in Michigan year round and if you venture outside, it’s not so bad. The snowbirds just get to feel the warm breath of God on their hands instead. It’s all good.
